How to Select the Right Window Size

When picking a window to install in your home, it’s important to check a number of details, including the style, color and design of the replacement windows. But whether you plan on getting double hung windows or sliding windows, make sure that you’re going to select the right size for your windows.

Right Window Size

Size of Window Opening

Your new windows should fit right in the existing window openings. Modifying a window opening just so you could accommodate a window can be expensive. So, unless it’s necessary, avoid altering the window openings that you already have.

Your contractor should take accurate measurements so that they can provide you with the correct sizes for your casement windows. Although there are standard sizes for windows, these may not actually fit depending on the size and shape of your window openings. In such cases, you’ll need your windows customized.

Floor Area

The size of your windows should be appropriate for the size of the room. Otherwise, your space could become too bright or too warm. It’s recommended to follow these general rules when it comes to window sizes:

  • Windows facing east or south – not more than 15% of the total floor area

  • Windows facing north – can go up to 15-25% of the total floor area

  • Windows facing west – not more than 10% of the total floor area
