What You Need to Know About Our Window Replacement Methods

The Renewal by Andersen® window replacement option involves the installers making an assessment on your existing window units. They would visit your home and take notes and measurements that work to ensure a custom fit for your replacement windows. Determining the right replacement method for this home improvement project is a crucial part of this process.

Renewal by Andersen of San Diego, your local source of windows and patio doors, discusses in detail the differences between full-frame and insert window installation: two of the window replacement methods we perform.

Insert Window Replacement

With this method, we set a new window into an existing frame. During the installation, we remove the window stops and the sashes, leaving the remaining components intact. An insert or “pocket” window is then inserted into the opening where it is insulated and sealed.

We recommend this method if we find the sills and frames are in good working condition. Since it does not involve the removal of the casing and trim, the existing construction must allow for the use of the insert window in a structurally sound way. The installation takes less time to complete, making it a low-cost replacement solution.

Full-Frame Window Replacement

Meanwhile, this method involves the removal of every component of your existing window unit. These include the trim, casings, sills and frame. All that is left is the rough opening. From there, our installers can perform changes to the opening’s size and shape depending on the requirements you provided preinstallation. For instance, if you want to install an egress window for your bedroom or basement, you want the opening to be large enough to accommodate the code-compliant replacement window unit.

We recommend this method if we find the primary components of your existing windows can no longer be repaired because of deterioration. It also makes sense if you want to improve your home’s energy efficiency. Your hinged French doors may have a tight seal that prevents drafts and moisture intrusion, but your current windows may no longer have it.
